Starting with the Bible's first two chapters, we discover that God's good plan for marriage is built on individual value and equality, shared authority and responsibility, the blessing of children and family, God's abundant provision, relational need and fulfillment, and the central principle of oneness in marriage. As discussed in Part I of God's Marriage Blueprint, this is the beautiful original blueprint for marriage.

WHAT WAS GOD'S DESIGN FOR MARRIAGE IN THE BEGINNING?

The Bible's third chapter reveals that sin severely damaged marriage—though not beyond redemption. Sin brought shame, guilt, and fear. It resulted in isolation, blame, pain, dominance, manipulation, and competition for control. These are not superficial wounds easily healed. As discussed in Part II of our book, Sin and its consequences go down deep, and we cannot cure them ourselves. We need a Redeemer to save us and our marriages.

WHAT WENT WRONG WITH MARRIAGE?

The restoration of our marriages begins with God's help and building on God's creation design. When Christ discusses marriage, He points us back to the beauty of God's original design. "At the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate" (Matt. 19:4-5). As discussed in Part III of the book, the New Testament repeatedly points us back to God's creation design for marriage. But we can't do it on our own. We need power and example of Jesus in our lives and marriages.

HOW CAN OUR MARRIAGES BE RESTORED?

You're not helpless or alone. Turn to God as you seek to understand and apply God's creation truths for marriage. Turn to your marriage partner to discuss what it means for your marriage to be built on God's design. Part IV provides a marriage inventory with discussion questions about each of the 12 creation truths for marriage described in the book. There is no strict formula or rigid set of rules on applying these truths to your marriage. But it is key that you build your marriage on God's truths and with God's help.
